Solving social problems through education

May 11, 2012

If you like exposé documentaries, Waiting for Superman takes a fascinating look at the apparent crisis that exists in the American education system where there are over 1.2 million school drop-outs per year.

According to the filmmaker, these drop outs are:

  • 8 times more likely to go to prison
  • 50% less likely to vote
  • More likely to need social welfare assistance
  • Are continuing the cycle of poverty

Filmmaker Davis Gunnenheim follows a handful of potentially vulnerable kids through a system that is portrayed to inhibit rather than encourage academic growth. Perhaps most importantly, the documentary suggests that proactive educational investment is the key to preventing the enormous social and financial cost of welfare assistance and incarceration.
