Fast ForWord

Improving the brain’s performance is possible but can be challenging at times so it’s very important participants stay motivated and to try their hardest every training day. Follow the tips on this page to maintain motivation levels, and remember:

  • Praise the student for every victory, no matter how small it might be.
  • Help the student to set daily goals (e.g. achieve one new high score today or advance at least 5% in each exercise).
  • Don’t make Fast ForWord a punishment by taking away privileges.
  • Make Fast ForWord a privilege by awarding prizes for goals achieved along the way.

Each reading selection (book) will follow the same structure. Show each student how to use the “Daily Checklist” (click to download) to ensure they complete every step each session. If your child is completing Cogmed, decide on a rewards system together and write this down in your training book. Rewards should be:

  • Desirable – meaningful to your child
  • Immediate – given in direct connection to the completion of a week’s training
  • Reasonable – does not need to be expensive or complicated (some children ask for one-on-one time with a parent, or to choose where the family will visit on the weekend or what they’ll have for dinner on Friday).
