You will need Reading Assistant compatible headphones. See the MySciLearn system requirements document (page 10) for a list of approved headphones for iPad and computers.
If using computer, we recommend the Logitech H390 (ClearChat Comfort USB) headset (pictured below).
These are available from electronics retailers in-store and online, and have been tested and recommended by the developers of Reading Assistant. These headsets have a USB connection that includes an inbuilt sound card to ensure a high quality signal between the user and the program, and vice versa.
Make sure your computer software is up to date. We recommend using the google chrome browser when accessing Reading Assistant on computer. See the MySciLearn system requirements document for compatibility information.
Watch this brief “Reading Assistant Tutorial” video with the student. Pay careful attention as it explains how Reading Assistant works and what to do each day.
When you first log in, you will need to download the Reading Assistant Plug-in. The speech recognition software will not work without it. Click on Instructor Message and then click on “Download Plug-in” to start the download.
Having trouble? Please refer to the Help section for more information.
Complete the first session with the student(s). Use this opportunity to make them aware of what they need to do and what is expected of them, and to familiarise yourself with the program. Individuals achieve better results with a coach sitting beside them.
Please don’t be concerned that some of the reading content relates to American history and culture as the purpose of the program is to provide the opportunity for assisted reading practice … and you may learn something about world history in the process!
Each reading selection (book) will follow the same structure. Use the “Daily Checklist” (click to download) with your student to ensure they complete every step each session.
It is important that the student chooses the “Read to Me” option for every new reading selection as this will help to build their reading fluency and comprehension skills.
